Climate Impact – Reduce C02 Emissions

We all have a responsibility to combat damaging climate change. Handicare focuses on activities that limit our contribution to rising temperatures and emissions.

It is important for us to understand how we can effectively quantify and manage greenhouse gas emissions. Thus in 2020, we initiated the Group’s first joint CO2 calculation according to Greenhouse Gas (GHG) Protocol scope 1 and 2. We will begin a scope 3 analysis in 2021, primarily through life cycle analyses (LCA) of our products.

The GHG Protocol is a set of international calculation and accounting standards. It is the most commonly used tool to quantify and manage greenhouse gas emissions. Emissions are grouped into three categories:

  • Scope 1: Direct emissions from the company.
  • Scope 2: Emissions from purchased electricity and heat.
  • Scope 3: Emissions from the company’s entire value chain.

To estimate climate impact, a calculation is performed from a life cycle perspective which entails identifying and adding up all greenhouse gas emissions that arose during the life cycle of the product or service that will be used. Performing calculations from a life cycle perspective enables Handicare to identify the steps of the life cycle with the greatest impact and the measures with the greatest potential to reduce emissions.
